Loving Thy Neighbor

Week 6, 2026 focus: LOVE
By: Lacie L. Jones

My wife and I proudly grew up in Lake City, South Carolina. It’s home in the deepest sense of the word—the place where we were formed, known, and rooted. When we later moved to Florence, even though it’s only around thirty minutes away, it still meant leaving behind what was familiar to us. Change always carries that type tension. New streets, new life-rhythms, new faces.

Yet something a little unexpected happened. Over time, no matter what part of Florence we lived in, our neighbors consistently met us with kindness, warmth, and love. Not perfect people—just people who chose to care for us. Some of them have become more than neighbors; they feel like family. Their love reminded us that community isn’t about zip codes, but rather the posture of a man’s heart.

In Matthew 22, Jesus is asked to identify the greatest commandment. His response: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind… and love your neighbor as yourself.” He then says, “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” In other words, everything God desires from us flows through LOVE—first upward toward Him, then outward toward others.

Make no doubt about it… we are absolutely living in an extremely sensitive moment. Opinions are strong, emotions are raw, and divisions are forming…AGAIN—even over things that, in the grand scope of eternity, are temporary and if I'm being honest... senseless! Cultural expressions, entertainment choices, and preferences have become battle lines in the sand. Yet Jesus does not give us exceptions to His command. He does not say, “Love your neighbor unless you disagree,” or “unless they think differently,” or “unless their choices offend you.”

NO!

Loving our neighbor does not require agreement at all. It requires humility. It requires listening. It requires seeing people not as issues to debate, but as those who are deeply loved by the Father! When we love God with all that we are, His heart reshapes ours as we experience His love. It softens us. It exposes our pride, our fears, and the ungodly judgments we may not even realize we’re carrying.

This is a moment for reflection, not reaction. A moment to ask: Does my response reflect the heart of my God?

MAKE IT PERSONAL: Am I known more for what I oppose—or for how I love?

May our community be marked by grace. May our disagreements never outweigh our devotion to Christ. And may loving our neighbor remain not just a command we quote, but a life we live.

Lets pray family…

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You with humble hearts, asking You to search us and know us. Where our hearts have become hardened, soften them. Where pride has crept in, replace it with humility. Teach us to love as You love—without condition, without fear, and without reservation. Help us to see our neighbors through Your eyes, not through opinions, preferences, or offense. May our words reflect Your grace, our actions reveal Your compassion, and our lives point others to You. Unite us in Your truth, anchor us in Your love, and let everything we do bring honor to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
